RhineCleanUp

The nationwide day of action: Saturday 12 September 2026.

Fish today. Plastic tomorrow! – We’re going to change that!

Our National Clean-up Day on Saturday, 12 September 2026

Let’s clean up the riverbanks together!

This year, we’d like to join forces with you once again to clear rubbish from our riverbanks.

Thanks to our sponsors, the Postcode Lotterie and naturstrom, we can provide you with collection equipment such as bin bags, litter pickers and gloves free of charge.

Under the menu item ‘JOIN IN’, you can search for a group in your region and join them, or register a group yourself with your family, friends or colleagues.

Whether you open your group up to other volunteers or prefer to keep it to yourselves is entirely up to you.

You’ll find helpful tips on how to organise your CleanUp, what to look out for and promotional material under “PRACTICAL INFORMATION”.

Working together for clean rivers

RhineCleanUp is committed to preventing river litter from getting out of hand. We are dedicated to protecting the environment and keeping rivers and oceans clean. Join us and show your support. Please encourage your friends, colleagues and neighbours to get involved too. We’ll be right there to support you!

How can you get involved?

You can sign up for a clean-up that has already been organised by someone else. (If there isn’t an existing clean-up, unfortunately you won’t be able to sign up.) The organiser will provide gloves and bin bags and give you a brief briefing on the route you should take.

However, you can also organise a clean-up yourself. This means you decide on the meeting point and route, you hand out gloves and bags to all volunteers, and you arrange with the local waste disposal service to ensure the rubbish is collected after the clean-up. You can register it privately or open it up to anyone interested.

Organise a clean-up in your area!

Start by giving your cleanup a name and fill in your email address so that we can identify you or let you create an account in a later step.

Together, we can make a difference!

The pollution of the oceans must be stopped.

By 2050, the mass of plastic waste in the world's oceans will exceed that of fish stocks. According to current estimates, approximately 10 million tonnes are added each year, with reputable researchers even suggesting a figure of 13 million tonnes. This is a serious problem that will have harmful effects on both marine life and humans.

We focus on rivers, because 70 per cent of plastic waste enters the oceans via rivers. Here in Europe, too, the problem is alarming.

We are taking action! Since 2018, we have been cleaning up riverbanks – initially along the Rhine from its source to its mouth, and now along 29 other rivers as well. In recent years, we have mobilised over 100,000 volunteers, who have collected over 1,000 tonnes of waste from various rivers.

This is what we stand for

We are an open organisation. Local groups from environmental associations, clubs, companies, social institutions, religious communities, political parties, circles of friends and neighbourhood communities, families and individuals are involved in our work. This unprejudiced cooperation is our strength.

We are all united by the desire to preserve and protect nature and the environment. That is why we are active in clearing rubbish from riverbanks. We also support prevention and education measures that help to avoid litter.

Our community stands for civic engagement that is supported by all forces in society that are committed to social coexistence. No one is excluded on the basis of their origin, skin colour, religion, sexual orientation or physical and/or mental disabilities. We promote social coexistence and, as a meeting place, make an important contribution to integration.

All people who share these human rights-oriented and democratic values are welcome to participate in our activities.

  • Together, we will identify a suitable collection point for your CleanUp.

  • Once all the details have been finalised, you will have the opportunity to showcase your company on our website (logo, information – including registration of the CleanUp).

  • You should calculate between 2 and 3 hours for the event.

  • We will then contact the local waste management authority and register the event.

  • We will determine the drop-off point for the bin bags after the CleanUp and organise the removal of the waste.

  • Where possible, we offer a face-to-face or digital introduction to the topic of ‘clean-ups’.

  • You will receive the CleanUp materials (bin bags, gloves, litter pickers, quick guide) in advance or directly when we can come to the location.

Our organisational services are based on the donation calculation provided by RhineCleanup gGmbH, which we would be happy to send you, free of charge and with no obligation, upon receipt of your enquiry.

As a non-profit organisation, we can issue donation receipts and invoices.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to send us an email – we look forward to hearing from you.

Deutsche Postcode Lotterie

Working together for a greener future: Deutsche Postcode Lottery is actively committed to our environment as a main partner.

The mission of the social lottery is to create a better world for us humans and to preserve our planet. The RhineCleanUp not only strengthens social togetherness, but also triggers a rethinking of environmental pollution and its associated consequences. After our employees have already actively supported the big "Rhine CleanUp" in 2018, 2019 and 2020, with the help of our participants we are again financially supporting the project from source to mouth this year. In addition to measures to promote the campaign, work equipment such as trash bags, high-visibility vests, gloves and grabs will be provided for the many thousands of helpers to clean up Germany's second-largest river and its tributaries. And the best thing about it is that anyone can join in and make their contribution to a clean environment.
